Effect Of Scanning And Interception Methods On Computer Files Virus Detection In Business Organization
This study was carried out on the effect of scanning and interception methods on computer files virus detection in business organization in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa Ibom State. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of operators/experts in the selected business organizations in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa Ibom State. In determining the sample size, the researcher purposefully selected 59 respondents and 50 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, and mean scores. While the hypotheses were tested using chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that computer virus infection has a negative effect on the productivity of business enterprises. The study also revealed that scanning and interception method are both effective in virus detection. Furthermore, the extent at which scanning and interception method effectively detect computer virus in the organization is high. Therefore, it is recommended that Business enterprises owners should make sure that their computers run Antivirus software. And they should purchase and download software from popular websites. Mcafee.Com and Symantec are two most popular sites.

1.1 Background of the Study
Globally, computer viruses have caused disruption to private and public organizations, governments and computer users, as they attempt to remove, modify or steal sensitive data. Research has revealed that computer virus infection is the process whereby the third part of the virus, the self – propagation component, allows the virus to quickly spread to other programs to which the virus is not already attached. Computer virus is made up two other components the first is the missing component, the second part is the trigger mechanisms. It‟s the third part mentioned earlier that is the self-propagation component, that infect systems .
Etymologically, computer virus in one partition can escape to other partitions. Virus quickly infects virtually all programes in the partition. The process is simple and very fact. The algorithm for infection requires only read, write and file renaming. Infection spread from machine to machine, and from organization to organization, in a number or ways as stated by Sophos, n.d.. Viruses can be transmitted by booting a PC from an infected medium, executing an infected program and opening an infected file. While the early age viruses were mainly spreading through floppies, the later age viruses predominantly spread through internet as established Mishra, n.d. .
Notably a virus can spread from a LAN/WAN based file server to any of the client systems attached to the server. Computer viruses can affect the productivity of business enterprise, depending on how the computers are deplored in the business enterprise, either as online system, connecting the business to outside world, thus as the computer system are affected by viruses, they cut the business from the outside world, thereby leading to loss of production (online shopping, n.d.). Where the computer systems are employed in managing the enterprise‟s information and tying employees data together in a database, attaching these systems by computer virus will make information processing challenging, thereby affecting productivity.
Intriguingly, many computer viruses are designed to self-replicate and self-install over a very short period of time. They come encoded with specific instructions to destroy and advance through its host computer, and can affect a multitude of programs and applications very quickly. Recognizing the symptoms of a computer virus can help to successfully remove it from the infected computer as quickly as possible; the sooner this is completed, the easier it will be to recover any documents or programs that may be damaged, and prevent the virus from further spreading. Therefore it is the responsibility of business organizations to be apt in their utilization of effective method of virus detection so as to protect their files and mitigate against unforeseen losses in the business environment.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Today’s society especially in Nigeria business setting has seen a dramatic increase in the use of computers. As a result users of personal computer today need to have a comprehensive virus protection mechanisms to face the growing threats of computer viruses. Virus attacks on computer are more harmful that shows up more damage to the computer. It is important to analyze the actions that a virus performs in one’s system and also the activities that are possible to occur over time. This helps in protecting our computers with needful security mechanisms to safeguard the secure information.. Accordingly, the magnitude of the effect depends on installation or uninstallation of anti-virus software on computer system.Where the computer systems are employed in managing the enterprise‟s information and tying employees data together in a database, attaching these systems by computer virus will make information processing challenging, thereby affecting productivity. Computer systems use as control system in a production facilities, when attack by computer viruses, will close down, their by halting production and affecting productivity. This means we can not ignore the effect of computer viruses on the productivity of business enterprises, upon this premise that this study seeks to examine the effect of scanning and interception methods on computer files virus detection in business organization.
1.3 Objective of the Study
The broad objective of this study is to examine the effect of scanning and interception methods on computer files virus detection in business organization.
Other specific objectives includes:
- To examine types of computer virus infection.
- To find out the effect of infection on productivity of business enterprise.
- To ascertain whether scanning and interception method is effective in virus detection
- To determine whether the extent at which scanning and interception method effectively detect computer files virus in business organization
1.4 Research Questions
The research is guided by the following research questions:
- What are the types of computer virus infection.?
- What is the effect of computer virus infection on productivity of business enterprise?
- Is scanning and interception method effective in virus detection?
- What is the extent at which scanning and interception method effectively detect computer virus in the organization?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
- HO1: Scanning and interception method is not effective in virus detection?
- HO2: The extent at which scanning and interception method effectively detect computer files virus in business organization is low.
1.6 Significance of the Study
Finding of this study will be relevant to organization both public and private. The study will enlighten them on the need to do a regular and thorough virus scanning on their computers so at to ensure they intercept the spread of viruses which is capable of causing them file loses as well endanger their business productivity. The study will also reveal the for business owners to employ specialist who can run regular maintenance and install contemporary effective anti-viruses that will be adaptive to their office computers as these are proactive mechanisms to take in protecting company files. Theeducational institutions and libraries working in fully computerized environments, in detection of viruses and preventing infection of their computer systems. Social implications – The society will also benefit by attaining knowledge about the different types of computer viruses and the measures of prevention of infection. Empirically, the study will add to the general body of literature and serve as reference materials to scholars and student who wishes to conduct further studies on related field.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The scope of this study borders on effect of scanning and interception methods on computer files virus detection in business organization. The study will further discuss types of computer viruses, how virus affect business productivity and the extent at which scanning and interception methods is effective in eradicating computer viruses.The study is however delimited to some selected business organization in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa Ibom State.
1.8 Limitation of the Study
Like in every human endeavour, the researchers encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. The significant constraint was the scantiness of literature on the effect of scanning and interception methods on computer files virus detection in business organization discourse. Thus much time and organization was required in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection. Also the study is limited in scope as few private business organization were selected business organization in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa Ibom State as the case study for the research. Therefore findings of this study cannot be used for generalization for other business enterprise like public sector within or outside states which creates a gap in scope and gives room for further studies.
1.9 Definition of Terms
A virus is a code that recursively replicates a possibly evolved a copy of itself. In other words, it is a computer program that attaches itself to other files or processes.
Security scanning, or vulnerability scanning, can mean many different things, but it can be simply described as scanning the security of a website, web-based program, network, or file system for either vulnerabilities or unwanted file changes.
An interception means that some unauthorized party has gained access to an asset. The outside party can be a person, a program, or a computing system. Ex- amples of this type of failure are illicit copying of program or data files, or wiretapping to obtain data in a network.
1.10 Organizations of the Study
The study is categorized into five chapters. The first chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions and hypothesis, the significance of the study, scope/limitations of the study, and definition of terms. The chapter two covers the review of literature with emphasis on conceptual framework, theoretical framework, and empirical review. Likewise, the chapter three which is the research methodology, specifically covers the research design, population of the study, sample size determination, sample size, abnd selection technique and procedure, research instrument and administration, method of data collection, method of data analysis, validity and reliability of the study, and ethical consideration. The second to last chapter being the chapter four presents the data presentation and analysis, while the last chapter(chapter five) contains the summary, conclusion and recommendation.
Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations:
This chapter summarizes the findings on the effect of scanning and interception methods on computer files virus detection in business organization in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa Ibom State. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.
5.2 Summary of the Study
In this study, our focus was on the effect of scanning and interception methods on computer files virus detection in business organization in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa Ibom State.The study is was specifically carried out to; examine types of computer virus infection, find out the effect of infection on productivity of business enterprise, to ascertain whether scanning and interception method is effective in virus detection, and determine whether the extent at which scanning and interception method effectively detect computer files virus in business organization.
The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 50 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent were computer operators/experts in the selected business organizations in Uyo Metropolis, Akwa Ibom State.
Based on the findings of this study, the researcher concluded that;
- The types of computer virus infection affecting the effectiveness of computers on the organization include; boot sector virus, direct action virus, multipartite virus, polymorphic virus, resident virus, and file infector virus.
- Computer virus infection has a negative effect on the productivity of business enterprises.
- Scanning and interception method are both effective in virus detection.
- The extent at which scanning and interception method effectively detect computer virus in the organization is high.
Based on the responses obtained, the researcher proffers the following recommendations:
Business enterprises owners should undertake the following:
- Make sure that their computers run Antivirus software. They can purchase and download software from popular websites. Mcafee.Com and Symantec are two most popular sites
- This software must be updated regularly as new virus appears daily; configure the program to automatically downloaded updates.
- An attachment e-mail should not be opened unless they know who sent it.
- If a suspicious message is received, it should be deleted immediately from the inbox. When a message is deleted, however, it is still on the computer system. It is wise to go into the deleted mail folder and delete the message again to permanently remove it from the computer system.
- Files should be regularly backed up in case the computer becomes infected, that way valuable data would not be lost.
