Abstract


This research study was designed to examine the effect of lack of qualified teachers on the performances of students in English Language in Egor Local Government Area. The data used in this study were obtained through the use of questionnaires and SS II results for the 2005 and 2006 session served as a basis for necessary and relevant information. Two hypotheses were formulated and tested. The first hypotheses which state that teacher’s qualification do not contribute to the performances of students ways rejected. Similarly the second hypothesis which states that the teacher’s qualification and experience on the job has effect on the student’s performance was accepted. At the end of the research study, the result obtained revealed that student’s performance are affected by teachers qualification and experience on the job. Government should improve the quality of the teachers by way of seminars, workshop and better remuneration.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The importance of English Language in all human endeavor cannot be over emphasis. The numerous contributions of science subjects to the social economic and technological development of most nations of the world is well recognized hence its basic knowledge is needed by everyone to ensure that the profitable exploration of economical technological potential is sustained. It is therefore necessary to lay emphasis on economical knowledge. The history of science subjects is as old as the world in the industrialized countries people like Socratic, Aristotle’s, Navier, Stokes, Newton, Ziegler and Natran to mention a few were able to make a breakthrough and a valuable contribution in their different fields which were aimed at alleviating the social suffering of mankind. The pursuits of science and technology are not restricted to the industrialized countries alone. The third world nations especially the Africa countries and trying to put in their most effort in the development of their economical and technological base since economic is not transferred. Nigeria has been making efforts to keep abreast with her counterparts in the development of economical knowledge.


1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Nigeria, the rate of unqualified teachers is very high; most of them acquire their certificate through various means in most education institutions teachers that are not trained to teach subjects such as science subjects are made to do so thereby not giving the students the required training and knowledge about that particular subject.

This has really affected the learning of the students. Also, in most cases, SSCE holders are made to teach in primary and secondary schools and this reduced the standard of learning in such school. Most of this schools that does not have, qualified teachers are those private schools that are approved by the federal ministries of education.


1.3 Purpose of the Study

The main purpose of this research work is to categorically look into the importance of English Language in the society and the effect of lack of qualified teachers on the performance of students in English Language in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. And suggested possible lasting solution to these problems.


1.4 Significance of the Study

The result of this study will enable the authorities concerned to know the effect of lack of qualified teachers on the performance of students in science students. As the saying goes that when the root cause of a problem is knew is know there is a solution effective education of this study would lead to a search of an effective solution to the problem. There by improving the state of science in the nation.


1.5 Research Question

From this study the following research question would be considered.

  1. What are the causes of lack of qualified teachers in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State?
  2. What are the major effects of lack of qualified teachers in the performance of students in English Language in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State?
  3. What are the importance of science in the society?
  4. What are the recommended solutions to this problem?

1.6 Research Hypothesis

The following hypothesis have been formulated for the study

  • HO1: teacher’s qualification do not contribute to the performances of students
  • HO2: teacher’s qualification and experience on the job has effect on the student’s performance

1.7 Scope of the Study

Nigeria being a developing country cannot afford to neglect its educational sectors, of which science subject’s education is of vital importance.


1.8 Definition of Terms

Business:

This is all actively engaged in by an entrepreneur to product goods and services to satisfy human wants in other to make profit.

Qualified Teachers:

A person who has acquired the necessary skills and methodology involved in teaching as well as mastery of the subject. In Nigeria context, the person should posses either the NCE, PGD; BED

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

5.1 Summary

In this study, our focus was to examine the effect of lack of qualified teachers on secondary school students performance in English language using secondary schools in Egor lga as a case study.The study specifically was aimed at highlighting the importance of English Language in the society and the effect of lack of qualified teachers on the performance of students in English Language in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. And suggested possible lasting solution to these problems. A total of 77 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are drawn from teachers of the selected schools


5.2 Conclusion

Based on the finding of this study, the following conclusions were made:

  1. Rate of corruption in the recruitment process is one of the perceived cause of lack of qualified teachers
  2. Cost of tertiary education is another perceived cause of lack of qualified teachers
  3. Lack of quality education is also a cause of lack of qualified teachers
  4. Inability of schools to pay qualified teachers is a bane to having qualified teachers
  5. An unqualified teachers ideas and influence have effect on the performance of English studies student
  6. An unqualified teachers will result in failure in examination
  7. Lack of unqualified teachers will make student loose interest in English language
  8. The effect of an unqualified teacher will lead to failure of students in competition relating to English language
  9. Teacher’s qualification docontribute to the performances of students
  10. Teacher’s qualification and experience on the job has effect on the student’s performance

5.3 Recommendation

Based on the responses obtained, the researcher proffers the following recommendations:

  1. Government should try to make the recruitment process of English teacher unbiased in other not to employ an unqualified person as an English teacher.
  2. School management should endeavour to pay the salary of teachers who are qualified and not try to cut cost by employing an unqualified person to teach English language.
  3. The teachers already in the classroom should endeavour to use teaching aids and organize practical lessons for effective learning. They should also try and avoid the use of native language both inside and outside the classroom since English language is best developed through oral practice.
  4. Students should be encouraged by teachers, parents and government to learn especially how to speak English, since English still remain the medium of instruction in our institutions of learning.
