Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Science, and by extension biology, has not always been taught in the classroom without practical activities. In fact, the laboratory and field were the principal teaching-learning strategies until about the 1980s(Vergara-Rodríguez et al.2022). These pedagogies came into existence as a result of science growing from natural philosophy, where the teaching and learning of theoretical concepts were not commonplace. The practical activities have heavily declined, and in some places, though still ongoing, they are poorly resourced. This decline has occurred as a result of an increased professionalization of teaching staff, who now teach from basic to professorate levels.
A number of researchers have shown that practical activities have to be closely linked to the theoretical concepts of the subjects under study in order for the necessary correlation to take place(Clark et al., 2021). Teachers ourselves know that unless a student can ‘do’ practically, then they cannot ‘say’ theoretically. Another strong view held is that practical work in science promotes the development and enhancement of common traditional laboratory skills. In fact, researchers are of the view that the quality of experimentation a biology learner will have later in life mostly depends on the quality of practical knowledge they get during their school practicals. Laboratory-based classrooms can also raise awareness of potential career prospects in science. To become a good researcher, especially in biology, the four things that one cannot detach oneself from are experiments, experiments, and biological experiments. Now 20 to 40% of a student’s time is spent on practical activities(Morris, 2020).
An earlier study that conducted a survey of senior secondary schools found that only a small quantity are adequately equipped across Nigeria. Moreover, considering the minimum requirement for equipment and facilities, a percentage of schools having laboratories are considered equipped(Sanusi, 2022). The teachers of biology surveyed also had similar views regarding the inadequacy of laboratory equipment in the senior secondary schools. This view was further strengthened by the performance in biology assessments, which showed that students from schools with laboratory facilities outperformed those without. Improvement in teaching equipment was shown to improve the academic performance and attitude of students(Mensah, 2023).
The laboratory is a center for educational training. The biological laboratory can be no less than a study center for subjects like biology, which are topic-based. A laboratory enhances the provision of a comprehensive program as diverse as biology(Whalen, 2024). The laboratory has the benefit of preparing students for a career in the application of computer-oriented living technology. It enables learners, thus encouraging their peers, to pursue independent learning. This is due to the laboratory facilities. Facilities can range from the most modern computer-operated biochemistry laboratory to a typical school and serve their intended purposes, provided they are available(Alam et al.2023). However, a computer-assisted entrance fee in the developed world does not appear to depress the entrance fee. This is not shocking. Even if the goal of effective instruction of students in practical principles is to expose learners to job and work environments or to lead them to realize working knowledge, it is important for the experimental sciences that learning in the classroom is frequently conducted in the laboratory.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Even though the living specimens and materials are more motivating, seeing breeds believing. Living and relating to what is to be learned about in the biological system have more meaningful connotations for the learner and foster the adaptation that learning creates new relationships or alters and partially replaces old ones(Harris et al.2020). Senior secondary school students face challenges in biology practicals due to inadequate laboratory equipment. This is no fault of theirs. The deficiency lies with both the school and the students. The schools do not have up-to-date laboratory equipment. For the students, it is not possible to offer what one does not possess. A student may have a flair for science, but if adequate equipment is not available, they will not be able to develop that interest. The inadequacy of laboratory equipment used in teaching biology has a negative effect on students’ academic performance. How will the students learn to draw the anatomical sketch of the alimentary canal or the reproductive organs in plants without seeing the specimens indeed? This inadequate laboratory equipment juxtaposes effective learning and thereby results in the low academic performance of the students in biology.
Inadequate laboratory equipment also serves as a setback to students’ interest in biology education at the senior secondary school level. The interest or attitude of a student depends on the feelings they have about a certain thing. Such feelings are aroused by coming into contact with things. It is an extension of a thing that gives their reflection on it(Knaus, 2023). Moreover, the statement of the problem became imperative with the glaring regular teachers’ complaints about insufficient laboratory facilities and equipment, which contributed to the poor performance of their students and the subsequent lack of interest in the field. Students’ support for the statement of the problem arises from the fact that one of the reasons why several governments at different time frames throughout the world have committed substantial funds to education is the belief that for students, education develops the knowledge, skills, and motivation crucial to contributing to national development. In the same vein, parents pay substantial amounts for their children to acquire an education(de et al.2022).
1.3 Research Objectives
- To assess the impact of inadequate laboratory equipment on the academic performance of senior secondary school biology students.
- To evaluate the effect of insufficient laboratory resources on the attitude of senior secondary school students toward biology as a subject.
- To identify the relationship between the availability of laboratory equipment and students’ understanding of biological concepts in senior secondary schools.
- To recommend strategies for improving the availability and use of laboratory equipment in enhancing students’ academic performance and attitude in biology.
1.4 Research Questions
