Abstract

Home video programme acts as a means of transmitting information and materials from a diversity of national and international sources.

The student’s personality can either be shaped positively or negatively by the home “video” programmes.

Many of today’s most popular home video features nudity graphic sex and sickening violence. Hit song often contains pornographic lyrics rock concerts are commonly scenes of drug abuse and bedlam.

Children who has become sued to watching home “video” especially drama are either clothed with fear from whether they must have perceived or they end up practicing some acts which they must have watched.

As a result of these problems, the researcher has decided to look into this area by analyzing these problems, its causes and effects and also proffers solution to the problems “does the home video which student watch make any impact on them or impression on them after watching?

Home video which the students watch contribute or make impact on the home video after watching and also contribute to their low level of performance and these will be reduce if the parents plays its proper role in monitoring the viewing habit and that the government should show that he is against delinquency in students and they should ensure that with the existence of remind homes, that children will be afraid to commit any act against the home and the society at large.

Research should be made on the following area;

Movies portrayals of juvenile delinquency
Adolescents social activities and learning

Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Background to the Study

Effect of home ‘video” on students academic performance entails a detail look at home video programmes which are not good for students at home, students get attracted to these programmes which make some impact in some of them which they exhibit at that tender age or later on in life. Although the mass media acts as a means of transmitting information and materials from a diversity on natural and international source, especially those aimed at promoting child’s social, spiritual and moral well being and physical and mental health. The child’s personality can either be shaped positively or negatively by the mass media.

According to Dennis Cole (2000) he say today children live in a world home “video” is the norm and so many people have come to believe that home video programmes have contributed significant to general academic weakness and low performance of students especially in the urban cities. Producers of home videos industries do not take much time in warning viewers about the scenes. Alicia Wittmeyer (La Times July, 2005) observed reports from different studies provided more ammonites for linking television vis a vis home “video” watching to poor academic performance. Although in some cases, they specify the age limit that should match such home “video”. But there is no mechanism through which those who watch such programmes are monitored and as such they find their ways easily to the students who should not use them. As a result of the home video programmes which students watch, they exhibit some action in the society they live in.

1.2 Statement of Problems

This research is working into home “video” programme which students are being exposed to daily and the effects these home “video” programmes have on them after watching such programmes. In order for these problems to be solved, the research is aimed at informing the public about the problems. Therefore, the following questions have become necessary.

1.3 Research Questions

Is it true that because some students watch home video they turn out to be delinquent or violent?
Does the home video, which students watch make any impact on them or make any impression on them after watching.
Has parental influence got anything to do with student’s delinquent behaviour?
How does the society or government see home “video” amongst students?
Does the home video, which students watch contribute to their academic level or performance.

1.4 Significance of the Study

It is expected that findings from this study will help in the following areas:

The significance of the study is that it will serve as a way of enhancing the knowledge of the general public especially parents on how to educate the student’s about what they watch, read or listen to fro the mass media.
Help to identify in students some of the problems resulting fro the watching of home video.

Further more this research will contribute to the existing literature on this subject and will be useful for further research purpose.

1.5 Purpose of the Study

This research is aimed at achieving the following goals because many children or students have fall victims into the hands of these television programmes called home “video” have been able to affect them academically or socially. The main purpose of this study therefore, is to identify whether the home “video” students watch affect them in a negative way. How parental background of students contribute to their exposure to home video vices. Attempts would be made also to identify the problems people attitudes towards them and possible solution to these problems.

1.6 Scope of Study

This study will cover only three secondary schools in Benin City, which includes; Edokpolor Grammar School (Oredo LGA) and New Era college (Ikpoba Okha LGA).

1.7 Organization of the study

This study is broken down in to five chapters.

Chapter one is an introduction to the study, which comprises of the background of the study, statement of research problem, research questions, objectives, significance of the study, scope of the study and definition of terms.
Chapter two reviews the literature relating to the study area. The literature review is analyzed into conceptual review, theoretical framework and empirical review, and a summary of the chapter.
Chapter three discusses the method used in carrying out the research.
Chapter four treats data analysis and the results of findings while
Chapter five highlights the conclusion and recommendations.

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations

5.1 Summary

The summary of this study is presented on the topic influence of Home Video watching on the academic performance of Secondary School students in Edo State. The chapter contains among others the conclusion and recommendations as well as suggestions for further studies on the subject.

Time spent watching home video decreases the amount of time available for pursuing other more healthy activities such as reading, writing assignments or house chores and family time. However, the effect of home video watch and television viewing on social behavior of secondary school Edo State includes: exposure to media violence has been positively related to subsequent aggressive behaviour, ideas, arousal, and anger. Additionally, there is a significant negative effective of exposure to violence on subsequent helping behaviour.

Studies also indicate that watching home video has a negative effect on children‘s academic performance. When children watch Home video, they are typically not reinforcing school activities or doing homework and children watching home video when they like tend to performed poor on reading. The effect of home video watching may influence younger children to become more antisocial, resulting in their becoming socially isolated which, in turn, attracts them to more violent media. As children spend more total time watching home video they spend a significantly shorter amount of time with friends as compared to those who don‘t. Most children who are exposed to violence through media or watching of home video had poorer school performance and its impact on their psychological adjustment was detrimental.

5.2 Contribution to Knowledge

The study has contributed to knowledge in the following ways:

Home videos has influence on social behavior of Secondary School students in Edo State.
Longer hours used on television watching has negative influence on the social behavior of Secondary School students in Edo State.
The use of projectors and seminars with the students will give guidance by providing solutions towards good watching habits among students in the Secondary School.
The study will serve as reference material to both students, teachers and administrators in
Edo State, the parents and researchers alike.

5.3 Conclusion

From the findings of this study it concluded that home video has influence on academic performance of secondary school students in Edo state. This also showed that the response of male and female on the influence of time spent in home video viewing on academic performances of students in secondary schools in Edo state proved significant.

The study conclude that longer hours used on television watching have negative influence on the social behavior of the secondary school in Edo State. The study notes that students on their own might not be able to tackle this phenomenon due to the pleasure involved in watching related media and home video programmes.

5.4 Recommendations

Based on the study findings the following recommendations were proffered.

Home Video Programmes should be controlled by parents to maximize the inherent advantages for Secondary School students in the state.
Time spent on viewing by students could be restricted to prevent addiction and counter negative tendencies associated with prolonged watching of Home video by Secondary school students
Teachers should educate their students on the differences of role play in drama and the actual reality of life such that students will not always take every action in a movie with hook and silk as behavior they could emulate
More attention should be focused on the male students in the control of time spent watching Home video especially those depicting anti-academic performances
Male students should be given necessary education on the dangers of emulating characters they see in movies from time to time as a way of inculcating moral discipline by parents.
Hence, to tackle this recurrent phenomenon in our homes, parents should monitor the shows, films and programmes their children are viewing. Also, to enhance students‘ academic performance, parents should ensure that high-quality educational programmes be made available and children should be encouraged to watch informational, educational and nonviolent movies and programmes
