Design And Construction Of A 220 / 12 Volts Single Phase Step Down Transformer

Abstract

This is a technical project write-up design and construction were carried out by me with deep intensive and extensive research work under the strict supervisor of Engr K.C Ugwu.

I all give credit to the authors of the textbooks whose I referred to in the cause of writing this project and its subsequent design and construction. In this project, I shed light on the basic principle of operation, the design and construction procedure.

Critical analysis of all the functional parts of the transformer and rectifier connected to it. It will therefore, be of great in serest and suitable to all electrical engineers and engineering students.

Chapter One

1.0 Introduction

A 220/12volts single phase step-down transformer connected to a constructed rectifier is one whose input is 220 volts and the output is 12 volts. The basic component of this transformer include two separate winding (primary and secondary) wound on a core-type core and clamped properly with iron frame to hold lamination firmly together to reduce vibrations and possible fuse leakage that could course humming. It’s main aim is to step-down the input are voltage of 220 volts to 12volts at the output.

1.1 Objective

As started earlier the use of extra low voltage circuitries, equipment and component etc. and the need for a very low voltage a.c source prompted me into the design and construction 220/12 volts single phase step-down transformer connected to rectifier.

The primary aim of this project is to design and construct a 220/ 12 volts single phase step-down transformer, which can actually step down a.c supply voltage to 220 volts from National Electrical Power (NEPA) to an extra low output voltage of 12 volts.

1.2 Scope of Work

This project has been carefully out lined to reflect in sequence the actual process taken to the realization of this lovely project work.

In chapter two the types of transformer, it classification is explained with the aid of sentence and diagram.

In chapter three purpose of the device which is 220/12 volts step-down transformer is describe including it significance.

In chapter four this contain how transformer can be constructed.

In chapter five principle of operation a transformer and rectifier was discoursed with it major factor to be considered.

In chapter six conclusions, summary and bill of the project including recommendation is deltered there.

Chapter Six

6.0 Conclusion

6.1 Summary

The design and construction 7 220/12 volts single phase transformer carried out by me is a mission accomplished in a ground way as all the set specifications and requirements were successfully met through with difficulties and problems’ I am proved of my great achievement as the transformer functions properly within the specified 1/p and output voltages both on load and no load condition as required. (Remainder it is rectified).

I met a lot of difficulties to reconcile established equations laws and assumptions of physical science to match up with my specification of 220/12 volts single phase step-down transformer which I letter build rectifier to it in order for the transformer to be rectified.

6.2 Problem Encountered

Naturally anything good does not normally comes easy, and the design and construction of this transformer is not exceptional. At the start of this project work, finance was mainly my constraint. It is the desire of any designer and constructional outfit to carry out any tangible project at minimal cost and at less construction material. I tried my best to meet up with these target.

My next come up was when I could not get a befitting workshop within the school premises that could provide me with the necessary construction support, such as, welding machine, machine for cutting lamination stamping etc.

This seriously crippled my desire for a speedy time off of this project.

When I got a worthy workshop of my test within Nsukka town, I began the project design and its construction, which I letter achieve it workability successfully.

6.3 Recommendations

In the contribution toward this projective I recommend my 220 / 12 volts single phase transformer for use in industries, workshops, factories, companies, hospitals and homes which uses extra low voltage equipments, circuitries and components for better efficiency and reliability. I recommend all this to e used with the aid of my 220 / 12 volts single phase transformer because it is rectified.

The Bill of the Quantity

Owing to my inability to manufacture the material and components needed for this project and unavailability of these materials used were brought from the market.

A comprehensive document of the material required for this project (a bill of quantity) was produced. This enables me to estimate the cost of the project through a properly conducted market survey research.
