Abstract

Culture plays a crucial role in the formation, social development, socialization and entire personality composition of every member of a particular society. The research is thrust to examine cultural impact on women education in some selected communities in Arochukwu local government area of Abia state. Survey research methodology was used coupled with 200 respondents who were mainly women between the age of 15 and elected through non-probability sampling method. 180 copies of questionnaires were returned for analysis, the frequency and percentage method of data analysis was used. It was noted that if education of women or female child is subsidized or free it will motivate many willing children even the unwilling will be forced to school. While raising national awareness in girl-child education and increase political and financial commitment through advocacy and sensitization of policy makers at all levels, as well as parents, school authorities, other leaders and girls’ themselves.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The project aims at identifying the impact of women education in some communities in Arochukwu local government of Abia state. In this domain parents attitudes towards the education of the girl children, parent socio economic background, the unresponsive attitude of females themselves towards education, certain aspects of the culture of the people and government education policy in the area of study. In the whole, a lot is invested on education in the belief that education is basic to national development progress. The federal and state government of Nigeria place high premium on education they recognize the fact that education is a weapon against ignorance, disease, squalor unenlightened Living and industrious citizenry capable of producing a prosperous nation more especially among the women folk. No wonder an adage says Train a man, you Train a soul Train a woman you Train a nation the Nigeria government taxes organization of the importance of education when it stipulated in the policy on education (1977) that education is the confide right of every Nigerian child, respective of real or marginal disability, this means that the females child is not life out. In a nutshell, woman education helps woman to play many of the modern roles in the society unity and society at large. Without education the society will still be backward and will look like a mirage and it will be worst when more than half of the society members which is the women group are not educated.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The modernization of traditional people for many years has formed one of the major problems to our national government and political leaders. It is Impossible for a developing country like Nigeria to make a meaningful head way towards the realization of developing while the bulk of its people continue to live in the past many communities in Arochukwu local Government Area still place more importance on male education more than female education. They believe that training a woman is a waste of time and money seem their education ends in kitchen. This has indeed been a big problem to the nation at large and the community in particular because it has greatly hindered development. No country or nation can grow without the backing and contribution of women.

Women are the pillars of the house, kindred, village, community and the entire society. Education in Nigeria does not allow women who form more than half of the population the opportunities to fulfill their potentials as unique and important individuals deserving respect. A modern nation and community reeds individuals who can take active part in public affairs, who are able to exercise their right and performed their duties effectively. It is then very ridiculous and at the same time puzzling when the political leaders talk of national liberation when more than half of the population (Women) are in bondage of illiteracy.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The objectives of the study are;

1. To trace the problems of women education and find out the problem benefit that can acme from the education of women for the development of the community.
2. To suggest possible implication of the findings to the study.
3. To identify the factors that give rise to these problems.
4. To make recommendation on factors that can contribute to positive solution of these problems

1.4 Research Hypotheses

The following have been put forward for testing

1. H0: there are no problems of women education and find out the problem benefit that can acme from the education of women for the development of the community.
   H1: there are problems of women education and find out the problem benefit that can acme from the education of women for the development of the community.
2. H0: there are no factors that give rise to these problems
   H1: there are factors that give rise to these problems

1.5 Significance of the Study

This research work will bring in to focus the place of women’s education on community development more especially in Arochukwu local Government Area and the entire designing future education policies to meet the needs of all areas within its Jurisdiction

1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of the study covers cultural impact of women education in some selected communities in Arochukwu local government of Abia state. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;

a) Availability of Research Material:

The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study

b) Time:

The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.

c) Organizational Privacy:

Limited Access to the selected auditing firm makes it difficult to get all the necessary and required information concerning the activities.

1.7 Definition of Terms

Culture:

Culture is the social behavior and norms found in human societies. Culture is considered a central concept in anthropology, encompassing the range of phenomena that are transmitted through social learning in human societies.

Women Education:

Female education is a catch-all term of a complex set of issues and debates surrounding education for girls and women. It includes areas of gender equality and access to education, and its connection to the alleviation of poverty

1.8 Organization of the Study

This research work is organized in five chapters, for easy understanding, as follows

• Chapter one is concern with the introduction, which consist of the (overview, of the study), historical background, statement of problem, objectives of the study, research hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, definition of terms and historical background of the study.
• Chapter two highlights the theoretical framework on which the study is based, thus the review of related literature.
• Chapter three deals on the research design and methodology adopted in the study.
• Chapter four concentrate on the data collection and analysis and presentation of finding.
• Chapter five gives summary, conclusion, and recommendations made of the study

5.1 Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain cultural impact of women education in some selected communities in Arochukwu local government of Abia state. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of cultural impact of women education in some selected communities in Arochukwu local government of Abia state

5.2 Summary

This study was on cultural impact of women education in some selected communities in Arochukwu local government of Abia state. Four objectives were raised which included: To trace the problems of women education and find out the problem benefit that can acme from the education of women for the development of the community, to suggest possible implication of the findings to the study, to identify the factors that give rise to these problems, to make recommendation on factors that can contribute to positive solution of these problems. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The total population for the study is 200 residents in Arochukwu local government of Abia state. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made of civil servants, elderly men, married men and married women were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

5.4 Conclusion

From the foregoing, it is evident that women play significant roles in national development ranging from food production, social to political development of the nation. Unfortunately, in some areas such as Arochukwu local government of Abia state, women are oppressed with humiliating and dangerous widowhood rites, relegated to low income jobs, denied the right to own land or property as well as denial of the right of daughters and widows to inheritance. Girls are sent to early marriages and preference is given to male education to their female counterpart, all in the name by discrimination and cultural beliefs. Women education has been seen as a sinquanon for empowering women to be able to organize themselves to increase their own self reliance and be independent in their way to contributing to family, society and national development. Through education, women can be conscientized on the negative implication of the culture and then seek solution that would ameliorate the situation and pave way for women liberation

5.4 Recommendation

Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made:

1. Parents should be sensitized on the need for girls/women education. This is to enable them understand that girls education is as good as boys education and to avoid discrimination against female children.
2. The society should abolish the cultural beliefs and traditional practices that militate against women. This will accord the women equal opportunity with their male counterpart in developmental issues.
3. The government should make education compulsory for all categories of learners. This will help to catch the girls young as they grow into adulthood.
4. Campaign should be mounted on the negative effects of early marriage. This will help to reduce the rate and interest of parents in giving their female children out for marriage
