Construction Of A Juice Extractor Machine


A Juice extractor machine is a device that is used to extract liquid (Juice) from fruits and vegetables in a process called juicing.

The machine is constructed manually with the use of local materials and tools. The material used for the construction of the machine is mild steel sheet. During the construction of the machine, the various parts of it were constructed separately using the mild steel sheet before finally coupled. It is constructed in a way that when the handle is moved the fruits are crushed to give juice.

The fabrication of the machine start with transferring of the information contained in the engineering drawing on the blank material from which the part is to be produced. The engineering drawing are presented on paper with the use of pencil and meter rule while marking out involves drawing of lines on a metal surface with the use of scriber, meter rule etc to indicate the profile or outline of the finished components.

Manually operated juice extractor machine was an outstanding low cost, easy to maintain. It is also easy to operate and good efficiency for small scale production. The machine encourage students to be self employed and reliant. It was discovered that the manual juice machine help for easy transportation of materials, easy separation of impurities through mechanical process, easy formation of solution through extraction etc.

Due to the fact that the machine is constructed manually with local material, it is not up to standard. That is to say that it may not be durable since juice is liquid in nature, it has a good amount of moisture in it, which would enhance the corrosion of the mild steel frame. And once corrosion takes place it will lead to weakness of the machine.

In fact, the manual juice extractor is at low cost and easy to operate. It is not as costly as that of electric juice extractor. It cost us only twenty-three thousand naira (N23,000). It is the cheapest equipment used to start up a small-scale production.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background Of The Study

Fruit have been cultivated for the last 2000 years in Southern China and South-East Asia, one variety the citron and south-east was carried to the middle east sometime between 400 and 600 BC. Arab traders transported different kinds of fruit like orange to eastern Africa and the Middle East sometime between 100 and 700 AD and during the Arab occupation of Spain, Citrus fruits first arrived in southern Europe from there they were carried to the new world by explores where they spread to fluoride and Brazil (By the sixteenth century by 1800 citrus fruits achieved world wide distribution). In the 1890s, the demand for them greatly increased because physicians discovered that drinking the juice of organs or other citrus fruit could prevent survey, A vitamin deficiency disease.

The popularity of orange juice dramatically increased again with the development of the commercial orange juice industry in the late 1920. In its early day, the juice industry primary relied on salvased fruit, which was unstable for regular consumption because it was badly colored in 1944 scientist found a way to concentrate fruit juice in a vacuum and freeze it with destroying the flavour or vitamin content.

After World War II most Americans stopped squeezing their own juice and concentrated because the predominant for, with the increase in home refrigeration, frozen concentrate became even more popular. In 1985 when reconstituted and NFC juice first out sold the frozen type. Today commercial aseptic packaging allow RTD juice to be marketed without refrigerated storage the current world wide market for orange juice is more than and $2.5 billion with the biggest area being the biggest in United States (USA) followed by Canada, Western Europe and Japan.

1.2 Statement Of The Problem

Fruit Juice over the year, has been successfully used in the production and manufacturing of the edible refined juice using machine which were fabricated and constructed to large scale production, industrialization and large capital requirement.

This make the extraction of fruit juice a fantasy to local and small-scale industrial establishment. Furthermore, the major ways by which the suckle in which fruit juice has been enjoyed over the years has been by the employment of teeth in biting off the mind and chewing up the internal tissue. When this is achieved, the juice would then be extracted and sucked in the mouth. The grossness of this procedure trends to put the human teeth in duress, imagine if it to be consumed in large quantity, if also led to low scale production of the fruit by the farmers.

At present, the construction of the coltage industry for fruit juice extractor has been facilitated to cushion these problem so far.

1.3 Purpose / Aims / Objectives Of The Study

Because of the great demand for juice produce a higher quantity and grade today brought about the need for this project.

The objectives of this project are;

  1. To reduce the bulkiness of the fruits in terms of size
  2. To ease transportation in terms of size maximum quality of juice from the produce or fruit used.
  3. Some fruit does not last for a long time after harvesting then there is need to process it into juice fruit to last for a period of time, like orange fruit which are too astringent for eating without being processed maybe used for chutney wine and pickles.

1.5 Method Of Research

Experimental research:- This involved the research carried out on the construction of fruit juice extractor machine in the laboratory by using appropriate material for the construction, like the type of material used is mild steel.

Information gotten from the library like the uses of internet services and discussion with academic supervisor and my fellow classmate.

1.6 Significance Of The Study

The effective construction of orange and pineapple juice extractor etc could go along way in solving the problem associated with the wastage and out if stock of many fruit in the market. Due to poor preservation technique its advantage over other preservation techniques its advantage over other form of juice extractors are food processing equipment include the portability and affordability.

The machine is in popular demand and it can be disposed easily- finally the importance in which this machine would be on the society are numerous in the sense that it will aid in reducing post harvesting losses.

5.0 Discussion, Conclusion And Recommendation

5.1 Discussion

Size reduction is in general all the processes involving the breaking down of particules to smaller sizes or unit, for the purpose of which depend on the end usage of the materials involved. It involves the use of different equipment of the materials involved. The uses of different equipment for the processes, where the equipment are mostly known as crushers and extractor and the usage of any of the equipment demands the knowledge of the nature, size, shape of the feed and the nature of the end product. However, the objective of crushing and extracting is to produce small particles from larger one and he smaller particles are desired either because of their large surface or because of their shape, size and number.

Also the cost of power is a major expenses to crushing and extractor, the factors that control this cost must be importantly noted. During size reduction, the particles of feed material are first distorted and strained. The work necessary to strain them is stored temporally in the solid, mechanical energy of stress. As additional force is applied to the stress particles they are distorted beyond the ultimate strength and suddenly rupture into frasments which involves generation of new surface.

In another development, it has been seen that the process of size reduction is one of the least energy efficient of all the unit operation, which means that while less than 1 percent of the energy power to the solid is used to create new surface, the rest is released as heat. So one measure of the efficiency of the operation is based on this energy required to create new surface, since the surface area of a unit mass of particle increases greatly as the particle size is reduced.

Meanwhile the efficiency of an actual equipment (extractor or crusher) is determine by the comparison with ideal equipment which does not always exist

5.1.1 Precaution
  1. Careful inspection should be conducted before starting the squeezing of the fruit.
  2. Connection between part should be checked.
  3. Nuts and bolt and loose part should be tightened before operation.
  4. Performance of machine should be checked during operation and error detected during working should be corrected and repaired immediately
5.1.2 Maintenance

Maintenance involves the routine check carried out on the equipment to avoid sadden breakdown that may lead to a great production cost.

Some maintenance guide are given below:

  1. It is advisable that the machine should not be exposure to moist air during storage.
  2. The machine should always be washed before and after squeezed to prevent contamination of the product.
  3. All bolts and nut should be checked for slack and retightened.
  4. The machine must be property placed in airigid support to avoid fall which might lead to break age of components.

5.2 Conclusion

Conclusively, manually operated juice extractor machine was an outstanding low cost, easy to maintain and operate and good efficiency for small scale production. The construction of manual operating extractor machine was to enable the students be self employed and self reliant instead of being job seekers from the narrow view of our projects it has been seen that the process of size reduction, especially in the industries, help for easy transportation of materials, easy separation of impurities through mechanical process, easy formation of solution through extraction etc.

5.3 Recommendation

The construction of the orange juice extractor has been seen to be economically feasible hereby make the following recommendation.

  1. The machine so constructed should be washed and sun dried after use to avoid corrosion and resting as a result of acid content of some fruit.
  2. Enough space should be provided in the second semester lecture time table to enable the students and the project supervisors discuss the possible ways to carry out the project.
  3. In the welding and cutting unit precaution measures should be noted so as to avoid electric shock and also to avoid the destructive rays that comes out during welding.
  4. Under graduate in engineering should be encouraged to construct such machine with the aim of mastering or knowing the principles involved in them and possibly modifying them for further use in food industries.
  5. Stainless steel can be used for fabricating the machine fit is to be used industrially. This would help increase the hygiene of the machine.
  6. A sieve can be incorporated to collect small basses’ particle that make their way out through the juice chute or outlet, with the extracted juice.
  7. A knifing section to cater from cutting and breaking the fruit before juice extraction can be constructed and attached to the machine to complement it operation.
  8. If it is feasible, the crushing drums can be made adjustable to vary the gap between the crushing drum, thereby varying crushing and juice extraction for various diameters and girth or fruit being crushed.
