Abstract


This project work on the construction of Aluminium/Glass Window provides a general knowledge of how to construct an Aluminium/Glass window and also talk more about Aluminium and Glass window in general. Window is a super structural member constructed to allow the passage of light, air and sound when it is not closed. In this project report, the components of the Aluminium and Glass window, functions of a window, properties of Aluminium and Glass, parts of the window and their functions, classification, characteristics of Aluminium and Glass, the equipment and tools used in the construction of Aluminium/Glass window were stated and explained.

Chapter One


1.0 Introduction

Building comprises of different super-structural components/elements such as window, column, beam, roof etc.

Windows provide heat and sound insulation to the building especially when they are closed. In addition of providing excellent task of passage of light, windows are usually made out of float glass or different polymer materials.

The material to be used in window depends on the requirement and performances of people and the geographical conditions of the area.


1.1 Definition Of Window

Generally, a window is a transparent or translucent opening in a wall or door that allows the passage of light; it also allows the passage of air and sound when it is not closed or sealed.

Aluminium/Glass window is a variety of window constructed by using Aluminium and glass as the construction materials. In this type of window, the frame parts are usually constructed with Aluminium materials/profiles while the other parts of the window are made up of glass materials.

Windows are held in place by frames, which prevent them from collapsing in.


1.2 Aims And Objectives Of The Study

The main aim of this project is to construct a standard Aluminium/Glass window which will provide the functional requirements of a window in a building.

Other objective is to know and understand the laid down procedures for the proper construction of Aluminium/Glass window.

It also entails the materials and methods used in the construction of Aluminium/Glass window.


1.3 Scope Of The Study

This project is limited to the construction of a casement sliding window with material requirement as Aluminium, Glass, casement/glazing rubber, window roller, screws, key and high skill of construction.


1.4 Limitations Of The Study

In the course of carrying out this project work, we encountered some constraints. Some of the constraints are:

Time:

This project work was done alongside with other academic works; hence the number of hours that would have been used in our construction was greatly shared with other academic works.

Finance:

We were also constrained in terms of finance due to high cost of Aluminium and Glass materials used in the construction of Aluminium/Glass window. We were equally constrained in the transportation fare to convey the construction materials from market to school.


Chapter Five


5.0 Conclusion/Summary

Aluminuim and glass as the constructional materials used in the construction of the window met the engineering requirements for construction. This is because they posses the four cardinal properties required of engineering materials.

These properties include:

  1. Strength
  2. Flexibility
  3. Durability
  4. Cost of labour

Aluminuim and Glass are not only used in the construction of windows but it is also used in the construction of book shelves, construction of automobile, aeroplanes, production of electric wires and cables, in the communication industries and in the production of home appliances.

Today, Aluminuim/Glass window has dominated most building in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large. Gone are the days when animal hide, cloth or wood are used to cover windows; Aluminuim/glass has taken over.


5.1 Recommendation

From my analysis, I hereby recommend that the use of Aluminum/Glass and their various alloys should be used or applied in the construction of windows.

I equally recommend that before selecting a material for any engineering scheme, you must consider the following criteria:

  1. Physical and chemical properties of the material
  2. Availability of the material
  3. Processing parameters of the materials
  4. Cost of the material.
