Comparative Study Of Bacterial Isolate From Different Drinking Water Sources In Lafia

Water in its natural form contains number of salts, alkaline, microbes and particulate pollutants. Due to industrialization and other anthropogenic activities; the purity of water is critically threatened. As a result of the increasing relevance of these factors, the necessity of water analysis is desirable. An investigative study was carried out to determine the bacteriological quality of drinking water in Lafia, Nasarawa State. Samples of drinking waters were collected from six different sources- stream, well, rain, borehole, sachet and bottle water (packaged). The bacteriological analysis was determined using the pour plate technique. The bacteriological analyses revealed that bacteria heterotrophic counts were between 6.11×107 cfu/ml in stream water and 7.1×101cfu/ml in sachet water, indicating high level of contamination of the stream water, the highest coliform counts of 5.146×107cfu/ml was from Poly stream sample, while the least count of 2.25×1011cfu/ml in sachet water. All the bacteriological values did not meet international standard as they were higher than WHO standard of zero per 100ml. Eight genera of bacteria which include Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella spp, Shigella spp, Proteus spp, Pseudomonas spp, Klebsiella spp and Bacillus spp were isolated from the water samples, the stream sample has the highest bacteria isolates, while the sachet water has the least bacterial isolates. It was concluded that not all well and borehole waters are safe for consumption and stream waters were of poorer bacteriological qualities indicative of health risk to the inhabitants of the geographical location.
