This study is on the comparative analysis of the strength of concrete made from various aggregate. The cost of river sand is much due to excessive cost of transportation from its natural sources. Also huge amount of depletion of these sources leads to environmental problems. Also environmental transportation and other constraints make the availability and use of river sand less attractive, hence it is very necessary now to find substitutes or replacements for river sand. The result for the sieve analysis carried out showed that the aggregates fell within the upper and lower limits of grading requirement. The specific gravity of river sand used was 2.6, while that of grit was determined and the results obtained from two outcomes were 2.23 and 2.45, and the average found was 2.34. The bulk density of river sand was found to be 1550kg/m3 and that of grit was 1650kg/m3. The slump obtained from specimens with different W/C of 0.35, 0.45 and 0.60 ranged from 51 – 86mm. The concrete produced from 100% grit as fine aggregate with a water-cement ratio of 0.45, produced a maximum compressive strength of 29.56 N/mm3 at the highest curing age in days, while sand alone as fine aggregate in one of the concrete mix, produced the least compressive strength of 17.33 N/mm3. Hence, the use of grit in construction is considered more economical since it offers optimum utilization and it is commonly available at different quarry sites.

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

This work was to present in one weight, the fundamental and practical information in the filed of the comparative analysis of the strength of concrete made from various aggregate which may be useful to people involve in civil and structural engineering and particularly, those that found pleasure in the design and related structure.

Due to the strength/high cost of various aggregate in the market the comparative analysis of strength of concrete indifferent aggregate have revealed that one can definitely substituted in various aggregate by using the mixture design of ration in different aggregate in building to reduce the mixture ration of aggregate or used any of the aggregates.

Where their is no granite stone washed gravel most black gravel is there no black gravel must in such area there will be surface gravel in the project is going to be sited.

A great effort have been made through out this work although it is limited in scope to asses their suitability as stand and concrete aggregate

1.2 Project Objective

This case study the comparative analysis of the strength of concrete made from various aggregates.

The project implement the following analysis.

  1. To determine the analysis in the existing aggregates and evaluate it’s suitability for use as a good building of aggregates by means of various laboratory tests.
  2. To determine the strength of concrete cube in difference aggregates in soil laboratory with a view to have on alternative in the building construction.
  3. To effect the reduction of rising in the building construction by using deference aggregates.

1.3 Particle Size Distribution

It has been stated that maximum size and grading of aggregates are very important find aggregate result in uneconomical mixes where as very coarse –grained soils result in harsh unworkable mixes.

The mean size or grading of many aggregate can be obtained by passing the materials in a set of sieves consisting usually of certain standard sizes. The sieves number is been expressed as the member per inches.

The sieve analysis should also conformed to the B. S. 410of 1969 for sieves for purpose of testing the procedure involve in making sieve analysis should also conform to the B. S. standard method that is involved in carrying out the sieve analysis of time and coarse aggregate.

The aggregate were carefully washed to eliminate dust particles and some other of organics mater present in it so the aggregate should be dust and dust free of any kind. After the wash of aggregate were kept to dry in a place for 24 hours with kept help of electric oven.

The particle were weight and e recorded the % retained passing sieve at each times the graph below shows the result got from each case.

1.4 Significance of the Study

In this study, the researchers have set on comparative analysis of the strength of concrete made from various aggregate. Therefore, this study will be immense benefits to all the public and private building engineers in Nigeria.

The building engineers’ experts would also benefits from this study as the recommendations made in this study will be used in hiring engineering experts in the area of analysis of strength of concrete used in building.

This study will also help to serve as literature (reference source) to students, individuals or corporate bodies into what to carry out on further research on the similar topic.

1.5 Scope of the Study

This study concerns about on comparative analysis of the strength of concrete made from various aggregate.

1.6 Limitation of the Study

There is no study undertaken by a researcher that is perfect. The imperfection of any research is always due to some factors negatively affecting a researcher in the course of carrying out research. Therefore, time constraint has shown no mercy to the research. The limited time has to be shared among many alternative uses, which includes reading, attending lectures and writing of this research, also distance and its attendant costs of travelling to obtain information which may enhance the writing of this study was a major limitation.

Conclusion And Recommendation

5.1 Introduction

This chapter presents the conclusion and recommendations based on the findings of this study.

5.2 Conclusion

The following conclusion can be drawn based on the results and discussion of the study conducted:

  1. Maximum compressive strength for the three concrete samples was obtained at the longest curing age of 28 days.
  2. Highest compressive strength was obtained from concrete sample mix of cement, grit and gravel.
  3. The results indicate that characteristics of the concrete such as compressive strength, which can be considered a secondary and dependent property is governed by the packing density of the mixture and are independent of grading and particle shape of the fine aggregate used for production of concrete.
  4. The use of grit in construction is considered more economical since it offers optimum utilization, noting that it is commonly available but considered an industrial waste.

5.3 Recommendation

It is recommended that the utilization of granite is strongly advised in higher strength concrete applications like in high rise buildings where strength compromise cannot be accommodated. Even if gravel is to be used in high higher strength applications, it should be sieved content washed before use.
