Abstract

This study was carried out to examine breast cancer awareness and practice of breast self-examination among women in Amai community in Ukwuani, Delta, State Nigeria.. The study was specifically aimed to assess the level of breast cancer awareness among women inAmai community in Ukwuani, Delta, State Nigeria, assess the level of women awareness on the need for self-breast examination as a Cancer screening practice, determine the attitude of women towards breast self examination in Amai community in Ukwuani, Delta, State Nigeria, and assess the factors which influences women’s practice and attitude towards breast self examination. The population of the study was made up of 259 selected women in Amai community in Ukwuani, Delta, State Nigeria. Questionnaire was the main instrument for data collection. The researcher made use of frequency tables. While the hypotheses were tested using Chi-square statistical tool. The study revealed that the level of women awareness on the need for self-breast examination as a Cancer screening practice is low. The study also revealed that women have negative attitude towards breast self examination in Amai community in Ukwuani, Delta, State Nigeria. In accordance with the findings, the research recommended that healthcare organizations and government bodies should implement widespread educational campaigns to increase awareness about breast cancer and the importance of breast self-examination (BSE). These campaigns should utilize various media channels, including television, radio, social media, and print media, to reach women of all ages and backgrounds. To mention but few.
