Abstract


The School Board believes that a wholesome, well-planned sequence of instruction about family life and human sexuality is essential to the general education of all students. Lack of information or pervasive misinformation can cause low self-esteem, increased risk for sexually transmitted disease, unintended pregnancy or sterility, and school dropout. Against this background, this paper therefore examines awareness of family life and sex education among the students of health education in Kano State, with a view to creating awareness on sex education. The primary and secondary method of data collection was used in collection data for the study. Primary data were obtained through the use of questionnaires and interview while the secondary data were obtained through review of relevant literature. The population of the study comprises all health education teachers in Kano, out of which a sample of Twenty-Eight (28) teacherswere used. The sample size was calculated using the Taro Yamane scientific formula.

Simple percentage method was used in analyzing the data collected. In testing the hypothesis, chi – square was used. The study revealed that the impacts of family life and sex education on students include that it helps in proper checkmating of students; it helps in fast improvement of the academic performance of students; it increases the students’ balanced sex life; it helps to stop unwanted pregnancy and it helps in building moral values in the students.. With respect to the findings arrived at, recommendations were made including that Sex education/family life education should be entrenched in the curriculum of Health education.

Also, information and communication technology is gradually revolutionalizing learning and teaching at all levels. Therefore, basic infrastructure like Computer systems and softwares should be provided in the teaching and learning of health education.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Family Life Education constitutes an aspect of education which empowers and equips the family with knowledge so as to enhance their well-being and strengthen interpersonal relationships through an educational, preventive, and strengths-based approach. These skills and knowledge include strong communication skills, knowledge of typical human development, good decision-making skills, positive self-esteem and healthy interpersonal relationships. The essence being to enhance family development and positive self- esteem. Sex education is defined as the education about human sexual anatomy, sexual reproduction, sexual intercourse, and other aspects of human sexual behavior.

Family Life Education is all effort fostered towards strengthening the individual and family life through a family perspective. This is to enrich and improve the quality of individual and family life such as pre-marriage and marriage enrichment instructions and programs, Parenting classes, and family financial planning courses The issue of Family Life Education, however has existed in the past in the form of traditional methods of marriage and child-rearing where knowledge, instructions and counsel was transferred from one generation to another as well as by written information using religious scripture ancient writings, and mythology. Arcus, M.E., Schvaneveldt, & J.J. Moss (Eds) (1993). In recent times, family life education has been conceptualized into a structure program and curriculum with learners being certified in the field. The study seeks to proffer an appraisal on the awareness of family life and sex education among the students of Health Education In Kano state.


1.2 Statement of the Problem

Family life education programs are influenced by certain factors which include culture, religion, age, gender, literacy and access to modern technology. The belief about health and illness varies with the culture, religion and spiritual perceptions of the people. The roles and responsibility of men and women varies among cultures. The influence of age and gender is also paramount to the development of family education. Therefore, the problem confronting the study is an appraisal on the awareness of family life and sex education among the students of Health Education In Kano state.


1.3 Objectives of the Study

The Main Objective of the study is to appraise the awareness of family life and sex education among the students of Health Education in Kano state;

The specific objectives include:

  1. To find out if students are aware of a family life and sex education program.
  2. To investigate the impacts of family life and sex education on the students.
  3. To identify the factors militating against effective teaching of family life and sex education in schools.

1.5 Statement of the Hypothesis

Ho1: The level of awareness of family life and sex education among students of health education in Kano state is not significant.

The study proffers an appraisal of the awareness of family life and sex education among the students of Health Education in Kano state. It provides relevant data for the effective formulation and implementation of policies to enhance the realization of envisaged objective.

Family Life Education Defined

Family Life Education constitutes an aspect of education which empowers and equips the family with knowledge so as to enhance their well-being and strengthen interpersonal relationships through an educational, preventive, and strengths-based approach. Education is viewed as the process of inviting truth and possibility. It is the wise, hopeful and respectful cultivation of learning undertaken in the belief that all should have the chance to share in life.

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations

5.1 Summary

This study focused on awareness of family life and sex education among the students of Health Education in Kano state. The study was set to address three objectives and one research hypothesis.

The objectives which include:

  1. To find out if students are aware of a family life and sex education program.
  2. To investigate the impacts of family life and sex education on the students.
  3. To identify the factors militating against effective teaching of family life and sex education in schools.

Based on the above stated objectives and the study carried out, the following findings were made:

  1. That students are not aware of family life and sex education programs.
  2. That the impacts of family life and sex education on students include that it helps in proper checkmating of students; it helps in fast improvement of the academic performance of students; it increases the students’ balanced sex life; it helps to stop unwanted pregnancy and it helps in building moral values in the students.
  3. That the factors militating against effective teaching of family life and sex education in schools include but not limited to too much workload on the part of the teachers; religious barrier; poor infrastructural facilities; cultural barrier and poor funding of education.

5.2 Conclusion

The main purpose of this study is to assess the awareness of family life and sex education among the students of Health Education in Kano state. Three research questions and one research hypothesis guided the study.
In this study, a survey research design was adopted, the population of this study consisted of all Health Education teachers in Kano, a simple random sampling technique was used to select 28 respondents for the study and a questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. Relevant literatures were reviewed which guided the objectives and methodology of this study. As result of the field study and analysis of results, the following findings were made:

  1. That students are not aware of family life and sex education programs.
  2. That the impacts of family life and sex education on students include that it helps in proper checkmating of students; it helps in fast improvement of the academic performance of students; it increases the students’ balanced sex life; it helps to stop unwanted pregnancy and it helps in building moral values in the students.
  3. That the factors militating against effective teaching of family life and sex education in schools include but not limited to too much workload on the part of the teachers; religious barrier; poor infrastructural facilities; cultural barrier and poor funding of education.

5.3 Recommendations

Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are made:

  1. Sex education / family life education should be entrenched in the curriculum of Health education.
  2. Basic infrastructure like Computer systems and softwares should be provided in the teaching and learning of health education.
  3. There should be prompt payment of health education teachers.
  4. This study encourages parents to educate their children on sex education; this role should not just be left for the teachers alone.
