Availability And Utilization Of Learning Facilities In Correlate Of Students Interest In Biology (Charles)


Abstract


This study was carried out to examine the availability and utilization of learning facilities in correlate of students interest in biology using some selected secondary schools in Takum Education Zone of Taraba State as a case study. The study was specifically set to the availability of learning facilities for the effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools, assess the learning facilities available for effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools, determine whether there is an adequate and quality learning facilities to meet the curricular requirements and educational standards for teaching biology effectively in secondary schools, determine the extent learning facilities are utilized for effective teaching of biology among teachers in secondary schools., and ascertain the impact of learning facilities on the students interest in biology. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprises biology teachers and students of some selected senior secondary schools in Takum Education Zone of Taraba State. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 200 respondents while 150 were received and validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables. The result of the findings reveals that there is no adequate availability of learning facilities for the effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools. Furthermore, the result of the findings reveals that the use of learning facilities has a positive impact on the students interest in biology as learning facilities engages students on a hands-on experiments , Multi-medias helps students visualize complex biological processes and structures, making learning more interactive and memorable, they provide immersive learning experiences that can inspire students’ curiosity, they engages students in real-world projects, and they improve students study habit towards biology. In regard to the findings, the study recommends that science teachers should be more resourceful by providing support apparatus for science teaching and learning so that students learn by doing, develop thinking skills, and attempt innovations. Chapter One


Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Science is the bedrock for development in any nation of the world. Every nation of the world needs science for development, independence, sovereignty, self-reliance and growth. This is because science and technology provide the basic tools of industrialization and economic development in the areas of communication, transport, energy, information, pollution and waste control, among others. Science education are foundation for sustainable development as they protect human scientists from ignorance, illiteracy, disease and poverty In Nigeria, the study of science is of great importance, that a lot of emphasis has been laid on the teaching and learning of science with the major aim of science education, as contained in the National Policy on Education, being to equip the students to live effectively in this modern age (FRN, 2013). This can be achieved by inculcating in the learners the necessary scientific skills and attitudes.
The major goal of science education is to develop scientifically literate individuals that are concerned with high competence for rational thoughts and actions. Some of the objectives teaching science in secondary schools in Nigeria according to Maduekwe (2006) include the preparation of students to observe and explore the environment, development of scientific attitudes in students such as curiosity, critical reflection and objectivity, also to help students apply the scientific skills and knowledge gained to solve everyday life problems in their environment, develop self-confidence and self-reliance through problem solving activities in science.

Science is a dynamic human activity concerned with understanding the workings of our world. This understanding helps man to know more about the universe (Ogunleye & Babajide, 2011).Without the application of science, it would have been difficult for man to explore the other planets of the universe. Science comprises the basic disciplines such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology. Biology as a science subject is practical and experiment based. Its objectives as contained in the National policy on education (FRN, 2013) include among others to equip learners with meaningful and relevant knowledge of Biology. This objective can be achieved through availability and utilization of biology laboratory facilities.

Biology laboratory facilities according to Udo (2006) refers to facilities that can be used to enhance or improve educational programmes and promote teaching and learning. Science laboratory resources/facilities can be human or material. The human resources have to do with personnel such as lecturers/teachers, laboratory technologists/assistants and students. The science laboratory material resources are those materials available to the science teacher for teaching and learning. They include textbooks, computers, thermometers, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, oven, incubators, chalkboards, model/mock-ups, television, radio and other electronic devices.

The availability of laboratory facilities is essential for effective teaching and learning of Biology and consequently a good performance by students. Ifeakor (2006) is of the opinion that learning can occur through one’s immediate environment – facilities that are available to facilitate students learning outcome. Students can master better the basic concepts of Biology when they learn by doing. Utilization of laboratory facilities defines the extent or how often the available science laboratory facilities are used during classes or laboratory sessions. According to Lawal (2013), such materials promote learning by doing, make the classroom lively, real, and meaningful and have the potential to make the content permanent thereby increase students’ academic achievement. Utilization of these facilities enables learners to focus their attention to important issues and acquire practical skills. Hence this study tends to examine the availability and utilization of learning facilities in correlate of students interest in biology.


1.2 Statement of the Problem

Previous studies have shown that the rate of failure in biology at senior secondary certificate examinations is high. A number of factors could account for this; one of such factors is inadequate/insufficient learning facilities in secondary schools which can affect the ways practical activities are been conducted in our schools top the list in the science education literature. This established evidence that the use of biology laboratory facilities have a significant influence on students’ academic achievement. In spite of the extensive report in these areas, there was no report on biology laboratory facilities availability and utilization and students’ academic achievement in the subject being documented in the Takum Education Zone of Taraba State. It is against this that this study was conducted to investigate the availability and utilization of learning facilities in correlate of students interest in biology.


1.3 Objectives of the Study

The study’s overall purpose is to examine the availability and utilization of learning facilities in correlate of students interest in biology. The study, on the other hand, was focused on achieving these precise goals.

  1. Assess the availability of learning facilities for the effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools.
  2. Assess the learning facilities available for effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools?
  3. Determine whether there is an adequate and quality learning facilities to meet the curricular requirements and educational standards for teaching biology effectively in secondary schools.
  4. Determine the extent learning facilities are utilized for effective teaching of biology among teachers in secondary schools.
  5. Ascertain the impact of learning facilities on the students interest in biology.

1.4 Research Questions

The following questions guided the study:

  1. Is there adequate availability of learning facilities for the effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools?
  2. What are the learning facilities available for effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools?
  3. Is there an adequate and quality learning facilities to meet the curricular requirements and educational standards for teaching biology effectively in secondary schools?
  4. What is the extent learning facilities are utilized for effective teaching of biology among teachers in secondary schools?
  5. What are the impact of learning facilities on the students interest in biology?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Ho: The availability and utilization of biology learning facilities does not promotes students interest in biology
  • Ha: The availability and utilization of biology learning facilities promotes students interest in biology

1.6 Significance of Study

Findings from the study will be relevant to government, teachers, parents and the academia. It will also make the government through the ministry of education to realize the need for provision of laboratory facilities thereby exposing the students to laboratory activities posting of qualified science teachers, technicians and technologists to secondary schools. It will motivate parents to through the avenue of the PTA make requirements of practical lesson(s) for their children in secondary schools and also this convince the science teachers that practical lessons are mostly essential for effective teaching especially in Biology. Finally, the study would contribute empirically to the body of existing literature and it would serve as a reference source to students or other researchers who might want to carry out their research on the similar topic.


1.7 Scope of the Study

This study will be focusing on the availability and utilization of learning facilities in correlate of students interest in biology. Hence the study will be delimited to some selected secondary schools in Takum Education Zone of Taraba State.


1.8 Limitation of the Study

Like in every human endeavour, the researcher encountered slight constraints while carrying out the study. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection, which is why the researcher resorted to a limited choice of sample size. More so, the researcher simultaneously engaged in this study with other academic work. As a result, the amount of time spent on research will be reduced.

Moreover, the case study method utilized in the study posed some challenges to the investigator including the possibility of biases and poor judgment of issues. However, the investigator relied on respect for the general principles of procedures, justice, fairness, objectivity in observation and recording, and weighing of evidence to overcome the challenges.


1.9 Definition of Terms

Laboratory:

A laboratory is a facility that provides controlled conditions in which scientific or technological research, experiments, and measurement may be performed.

Academic Performance:

Academic achievement represents performance outcomes that indicate the extent to which a person has accomplished specific goals that were the focus of activities in instructional environments, specifically in school, college, and university.


1.10 Organizations of the Study

The study is categorized into five chapters. The first chapter presents the background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study, research questions and hypothesis, the significance of the study, scope/limitations of the study, and definition of terms. The chapter two covers the review of literature with emphasis on conceptual framework, theoretical framework, and empirical review. Likewise, the chapter three which is the research methodology, specifically covers the research design, population of the study, sample size determination, sample size, and selection technique and procedure, research instrument and administration, method of data collection, method of data analysis, validity and reliability of the study, and ethical consideration. The second to last chapter being the chapter four presents the data presentation and analysis, while the last chapter(chapter five) contains the summary, conclusion and recommendation.

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations:

5.1 Introduction

This chapter summarizes the findings on the availability and utilization of learning facilities in correlate of students interest in biology using some selected secondary schools in Takum Education Zone of Taraba State as a case study. The chapter consists of summary of the study, conclusions, and recommendations.


5.2 Summary of the Study

In this study, our focus was to examine the availability and utilization of learning facilities in correlate of students interest in biology using some selected secondary schools in Takum Education Zone of Taraba State as a case study. The study was specifically set to assess the availability of learning facilities for the effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools, assess the learning facilities available for effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools, determine whether there is an adequate and quality learning facilities to meet the curricular requirements and educational standards for teaching biology effectively in secondary schools, determine the extent learning facilities are utilized for effective teaching of biology among teachers in secondary schools., and ascertain the impact of learning facilities on the students interest in biology.

The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 150 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are biology teachers and students of some selected senior secondary schools in Takum Education Zone of Taraba State .


5.3 Conclusions

Based on the findings of this study, the researcher made the following conclusion.

  1. There is no adequate availability of learning facilities for the effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools.
  2. The learning facilities available for effective teaching of biology in the selected secondary schools includes: laboratories, libraries, reference materials, and multimedia resources.
  3. There is no adequate and quality learning facilities to meet the curricular requirements and educational standards for teaching biology effectively in secondary schools.
  4. What is the extent learning facilities are utilized for effective teaching of biology among teachers in secondary schools?
  5. The use of learning facilities has a positive impact on the students interest in biology as learning facilities engages students on a hands-on experiments , Multi-medias helps students visualize complex biological processes and structures, making learning more interactive and memorable, they provide immersive learning experiences that can inspire students’ curiosity, they engages students in real-world projects, and they improve students study habit towards biology.

5.4 Recommendation

Based on the responses obtained, the researcher proffers the following recommendations:

  1. It is evident that availability of biology laboratory facilities promote learning of the subjects. Therefore government and all other stakeholders of education should as a matter of priority make available these facilities in the schools.
  2. It is important that resources are made available for establishing laboratories with adequate facilities in schools. Hence, the Nigerian government should include practical activities in science as a part of the formal assessment procedures and take immediate steps to equip/set up science laboratories for the effective teaching and learning of science.
  3. Science teachers should be more resourceful by providing support materials for science teaching and learning so that students learn by doing, develop thinking skills, and attempt innovations.
