Availability And Utilization Of Internet Facilities For Teaching And Learning Of Computer Science Education In Colleges Of Education In Lagos State

Abstract

This study was carried out on the availability and utilization of internet facilities for teaching and learning of computer science education in colleges of education in Lagos state. The study was specifically set to examine the level of availability of internet resources for teaching and learning of computer education in colleges of education in Lagos state, find out if internet resources are adequately accessible for teaching and learning of computer education in colleges of education in Lagos state, examine the extent at which teachers utilize internet facilities during teaching and learning of computer education in colleges of education in Lagos state, and ascertain whether the use of internet facilities facilitates effective teaching and learning of computer education in colleges of education in Lagos state. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of computer science students of some selected Colleges of Education in Lagos State. In determining the sample size, the researcher purposefully selected 200 respondents and 150 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables, while the hypotheses were tested using chi-square statistical tool. The result of the findings reveals that there is no adequate availability of internet resources for teaching and learning of computer education in colleges of education in Lagos state. The study also revealed that the extent at which teachers utilizes internet facilities during teaching and learning of computer education in colleges of education in Lagos state is high. Further findings showed that the use of internet facilities facilitate effective teaching and learning of computer education in colleges of education in Lagos state. Therefore, it is recommended that more computers with Internet connectivity should be provided to increase the level of access to ICTs among teachers and students. Internet cables should be instituted in the lecture halls to encourage Internet use among teachers during instructions. Standby generators and Uninterrupted Power supply (UPSs) should be made available for the computer labs in schools to cater the need for reliable power supply. To mention but a few.

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Internet is a montage of thousands of computer networks that cover the planet. The uses of internet are enormous ranging from academic research, receipt of global information, linkage with other institutions of the world, bridging communication gap between developed and developing countries and also assist students to be computer literates. The internet is loaded with data and information which provides students with opportunity to engage in more challenging and life time activities. The internet is a uniform, global computer network connecting millions of computers across the world. It is a voluntary network in which many computers connected have chosen to do so in order to share and exchange information in a quick and effective manner. The internet is one of the most unifying powers known to man. It is a worldwide computer network where one can find a lot of information and where you can communicate with other people all over the world. For instance you can look for articles in other libraries from your computer and communicate with friends.

The internet is a computer network made up of thousands of networks worldwide. No one knows exactly how many computers are connected to the internet. It is certain however that this number is in the millions and is increasing at a rapid rate. No one is in charge of the internet but there are organizations which develop technical aspects of this network and set standards for creating applications on it. There is no particular governing body in control of it. Private companies own the internet backbone through which internet traffic flows. All computers on the internet communicate with one another using the Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol Suite. Computers on the internet use Client/ Server Architecture. This means that the remote server machine provides files and services to the user’s local client machine. Software can be installed on a client’s computer to take advantage of the latest access technology. The internet consists primarily of a variety of access protocols. Many of these protocols feature programmes that allow users to search for and retrieve materials made available by the protocol.

The importance and usefulness of internet cannot be overemphasized. The National Policy on Education [2014], recognizes the prominent role of Information Communication Technology [internet] in the modern world today hence the integration of ICT in Education in Nigeria [Adaomi and Kpangban, 2010]. To actualize this goal, the government promised to provide basic infrastructure and training at the primary school, and secondary school level. Computer Education is made a pre-vocational elective and a vocational elective at the tertiary school. The federal ministry of Education launched an ICT driven project known as Schoolnet which is intended to equip all schools in Nigeria with computers and communication techniques. To adequately provide ICT facilities to tertiary, the Federal Government commissioned a Mobile Internet Unit [MIU] which operated by the Nigerian national informational technology development Agency [NITDA]. The MIU is a locally made bus that has been converted into a mobile training and Cyber Centre with ten workstations all networked and connected to the internet. It is also equipped with printers, photocopiers and a number of the multimedia facilities.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Computer education is a very vital subject for technological development, the poor performance of tertiary students has become a source of worry to stakeholders in education. Some scholars has attributed this ugly scenario to so many factors including poor facilities, inadequate internet resources and usage, poor quality teachers with ICT competency amongst others. As a result, this makes the morale and interest of the students in computer education low. On the other hand Ukpabi (2018) observed that the internet tools allow the access, processing and production of information available in text format, image, sound, data, multimedia and hypermedia documents, constituting an essential language of communication in contemporary society (Lévy, 2001) and this is importance of internet usage to students’ academic success. Contrarily some students use the internet for non-academic activities like gaming and social networking, causing them to miss class (Singh et al., 2013). Furthermore, students utilize the internet for entertainment rather than study, which might result in lowered academic standards. Charting, downloading, viewing movies online, playing online games, and online shopping are the most popular uses of the internet among students (Akin-Adramola, 2014). This shows that some students do not receive adequate instruction on how to utilize the internet for academic purposes. If its use is not supervised, the internet may be a terrible instrument for improved academic attainment. In addition, the issue of poor funding of schools in Nigeria has significantly affected the adequate provision of internet facilitates in the educational sector. This problem on the other hand has influenced the use of internet facilities during processes. In the light of the above, this study seeks to examine the availability and utilization of internet facilities for teaching and learning of computer science education in colleges of education in Lagos state.

1.8 Limitation of the Study

This research project, like all human endeavors, had some challenges that threatened to derail the study’s completion. One of the reasons is that the time allotted for this work was so limited that the researcher did not have enough time to complete the task thoroughly. During data collection, the researcher also had to put forth extra effort to understand the respondents’ interview schedules, several of whom fell into the incomprehensible age group. Also, there were financial and transportation constraints to deal with. Insufficient funds tend to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing the relevant materials, literature, or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire, interview).
