The research assessing the role of broadcast media in sensitizing people of Osogbo local government towards environmental sanitation. The physical environment is very important to the survival of the entire universe, and Nigeria as a nation has been battling to reduce the risks, resulting from poor sanitary conditions and unwholesome toilet habits in our cities and communities. Chapter One

Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Throughout the world, the problem of polluted environment has become a very disturbing phenomenon. Environmental problems plaguing the world are enormous. But perhaps the most serious and worrisome in Nigeria is the physical environment in terms of the low level of sanitation and gross environmental indiscipline in our cities and communities. Apart from the health significance of heaps of refuse as a health hazard, they also make our environment ugly. The problem of solid waste disposal in Nigeria has become a national malaise. Filth is an eyesore and a nuisance. It signifies decadence and backwardness. A look at the Nigerian homes, toilets, streets, kitchens, corridors, gutters, staircases, markets, abattoirs, would reveal the very low levels of sanitation. The woe of poor environmental sanitation such as indiscriminate waste disposal is evidence of the crucial role environment occupies in deciding the health of a man.In fact, never before, in the history of Nigeria has the need become more imperative and urgent to sharpen our consciousness concerning our surroundings. For in such consciousness lies our dignity and salvation as a people and as a nation. This is because some Nigerian still go about with the dangerous impression that dorti no dey kill black man (Filth does not kill black man) However, over the years, specific measures undertaken by the Nigerian Government both in the past and present have not yielded significant success. The objectives of environmental sanitation are to create and maintain conditions in the environment that will promote health and prevent diseases (Lucas and Gilles, 1973). This is because Environmental Sanitation deals with:

  • Methods for the disposal of excreta, sewage and community wastes to ensure that they are adequate and safe.
  • Water supplies, to ensure that they are pure and wholesome.
  • Housing to ensure that it is a character likely to:

Today living in a sustainable environment has become an issue on international concern which is making headlines both in the print and electronic media. Also, global warming, climate change, green house gases effect, depletion of ozone layer, acidic rain and other climatic and environmental issues are now the hot and prioritized topics in the global broadcast media and many local stations. Both the governments and the people depend on communication and updates from the broadcast media not only for disseminating information but also in setting agenda for the development and other allied activities. Hence, communication media become powerful tool for disseminating information and diffusion of innovations. Media play a vital role in educating and enlightening the people and the governments to protect and preserved natural resources in the interest of the future generations and the climatic chaos.

The significant of the study is to reveal to the entire world; the role expected of mass media concerning environmental sustainability, since little is known about climate change, global warming, ozone layer, green houses gases and their impact on human existence. Also, to let the public know that mass media is their eye, ear, nose e. t. c who will perceive an event on their behalf and later communicate it to the public. Therefore, mass media messages should not be taken for granted. Future researchers will also find this work very interesting to consult while working on a similar topic

1.6 Scope and Limitation of the Study

The scope of the study covers assessment of the role of broadcast media in the sensitization of people of Osogbo towards environmental sanitation. The researcher encounters some constrain which limited the scope of the study;

a) Availability of Research Material:

The research material available to the researcher is insufficient, thereby limiting the study

b) TIME:

The time frame allocated to the study does not enhance wider coverage as the researcher has to combine other academic activities and examinations with the study.

c) Organizational Privacy:

Limited Access to the selected auditing firm makes it difficult to get all the necessary and required information concerning the activities.

Chapter Five

Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation

5.1 Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was assessment of the role of broadcast media in the sensitization of people of Osogbo towards environmental sanitation. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of role of broadcast media in the sensitization of people of Osogbo towards environmental sanitation

5.2 Summary

This study was on assessment of the role of broadcast media in the sensitization of people of Osogbo towards environmental sanitation.Four objectives were raised which included:To investigate the perceptual and potential roles of broadcast media in promoting environmental education and awareness to the people of Osogbo, to examine the relationship between the role of broadcast media on environmental education and the level of environmental awareness among the people of Osogbo, to highlight the most important functions of the broadcast media, to ascertain the influence of broadcast media on the respondents decision making. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The total population for the study is 200 staff of ministry of environment Osun state. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made environmental instructors, computer operators, senior staff and junior staff were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

5.3 Conclusion

It is pertinent to know that human degrading and devastating activities on the environment had caused a lot of environmental problems on human existence. In 1991 and 2006 census reports show that about 80% of industries in Nigeria discharge liquids, solid and gaseous wastes directly into the environment without adequate treatment that meet the basic standards. Many nations worldwide have enacted legislation to regulate various types of pollution as well as to mitigate its adverse effects. But, no matter the kinds of strategies put in place by the Government or the organizations concern without effective utilization of Mass Media would be a waste of effort. Thus, there is a need for the Mass Media to review their roles since they have been accepted to be a force in the shaping and reshaping of the society.

5.4 Recommendation

This study recommends a replacement of the watch-dog role to that of a Guide-dog role. The basis for this recommendation includes that the mass media watch dog role has been interpreted to meddlesomeness by both the government and the governed [Tejumaiye 2004]. Guide-Dog journalism is derived from general disinterestedness of citizens in societal or collective problems. It is a proactive as well as reactive phenomenon to the collective will of ensuring that the society in which we live is made better for all. Guide dogging not only gives the people news and information but also help them do their jobs as citizens. It does not watch the environment, but also actually challenge the people to engage and take ownership of the problems of the society, as well as not to position the people as spectators, but as active participants in the societal problems and successes
