Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Today the sedentary lifestyle related diseases have become burdensome, causing mortality in middle and lower income countries. This is exacerbated by a lack of inclusive environments, a shortage of personnel to promote sports, increased reliance on technological devices, trantime management constraints. Engaging in sports on the other hand is prescribed by international bodies and Governments because numerous researchers have reported that engaging in sport or physical activities improves one‟s social, physiological and psychological function. Participation in sports is recommended because it yields a variety of physiological, psychological and social benefits. Engaging in sports has been reported to reduce the risks of lifestyle related diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity, hypertension, cancer and diabetes mellitus. In addition to health benefits, one experiences a greater quality of life socially and psychologically. An examination of the literature further reveals that students are not engaging in enough sports, placing the heath of future leaders at risk of mortality caused by noncommunicable diseases (WHO, 2014).

Researchers have investigated and established several key impediment os students participation in sports. Justifications for students participation in sports include; enjoyment, skills development, friendships, competition, fitness, health, achievement, status, fun, energy and stress release. Investigators further reveal that while providing sports activity is rewarding to the student and the institution, not all students are able to enjoy these rewards, because there are barriers preventing students‟ participation. These barriers include; time management, demanding academic workloads, a lack of partners to participate with in sport activities, financial challenges, the state and accessibility of facilities (Hoe, 2007). Researchers broadly classify these barriers as intrapersonal, interpersonal and structural constraints to participation in sports (Jackson & Godbey, 1991).

Students who engage in sports activities experience a better quality of life. Competitively, students who excel in sports receive recognition on various public platforms, which is attributed to the institution one is representing (Desrochers, 2013). Furthermore, the recognition of students who excel in academics has a positive impact on the recruitment of school learners, institutional image, and increases the likelihood of private donors investing in the institution (Desrochers, 2013). Investigators further reveal that while providing sports activity is rewarding to the student and the institution, not all students are able to enjoy these rewards, because there are barriers preventing students‟ participation. The present study tries to assess these impediments to students participation in sport in public secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In developing countries, students often face barriers to participate in sport activities, these may include complex issues like attitudes towards sports, traditional and religious beliefs, and physical education systems, i.e. the curriculum designed for each level, access to sporting infrastructure including services, facilities and equipment. Byrne& Hills (2007).

Several researchers across the country have conducted studies to address the issue of low levels of students participation in sports in public secondary schools (Mugwedi&Mulibana, 2014). However, none of the previous researchers include the views of students or report on the students‟ views at the public secondary schools students. With the Strategic Plan on the verge of being outdated, an exploratory study was conducted to understand the factors that affect student participation in sports activity. Understanding the current impediments which affect student participation in sports is important for secondary schools policy makers when designing strategies to improve the delivery of student services.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The overall aim of this study is to examine the impediments to students participation in sport in public secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State. Hence, the study will be channeled to the following specific objectives;

  1. Ascertain whether there is availability of sporting facilities in public secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.
  2. Determine the extent students participate in sports activities in public secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.
  3. Identity the impediments to students participation in sports activities in public secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

1.4 Research Question

The following questions are formulated inline with the study objectives;

  1. Is there is availability of sporting facilities in public secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State?
  2. What is the extent students participate in sports activities in public secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State?
  3. What are the impediments to students participation in sports activities in public secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Ho: The extent students participate in sports activities in public secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State is high.
  • Ha: The extent students participate in sports activities in public secondary schools in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State is low.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will be of immense benefit to the society; the school, stakeholders, students, parents, etc. It is believed that, by the findings of the work, students will begin to appreciate sports more and participate more in order to develop themselves. By this, they will realize the need to create more time for themselves in order to engage in sport. Consequently, it will improve their performance. Also, parents will be made to know why their children/wards should engage in sport and why they should be allowed to. This will then improve performance in sports.

Similarly, the schools will be made to realize the need to create an opportunity and enabling environment for students’ participation in sports to promote performance. The schools will come to know that they need to provide sport facilities to enhance performance. The support of the curriculum planners and stakeholders is germane to performance of the students in sport. It is believed that this work will help to improve the support by de-emphasising the core-subjects at the expenses of sports. The stakeholders will thus be made to understand that both deserve adequate and equal attention without one affecting the other. The general attitude and support of the society towards sport participation will be improved. That is, this work will help the society realize the need to support the school and the children to participate in sport. The present attitude of the society does not help matters as students who engage in sports are tagged unserious. But, it is believed that this work will help change this perception of the society about sports. Finally, it is the belief of this work that further research work will benefit from its contents and findings. Thus, it will serve as a source of reference for other research works.
