Android Class Attendance Management System


Over the years the manual attendance management has been carried across most of educational institutions. To overcome the problems of manual attendance, the researcher has developed “An Android Attendance Management System”. The Attendance Management System is android based, which can be implemented on any android operating device, android operating system is also the most often used operating system for tablet computers worldwide, with a 66 percent share of the global market. (2016), in this application, the system communicates with the database residing on a remote server. It calculates automatically, the attendance percentage of students without any manual paper-based work. The system facilitates the end users with interactive design and automated processing of attendance management.

Chapter One

1.1 Introduction

Due to student’s interest in classrooms, and the study environment of university or institution, recording absence at a department or faculty having a large number of students in a classroom is a difficult task and time-consuming. Moreover, the process takes much time, and many efforts are spent by the staff of the department to complete the attendance rates for each student. So in many institutions and academic organizations, attendance is a very important criterion which is used for various purposes. These purposes include record keeping, assessment of students, and promotion of optimal and consistent attendance in class. As long as in many developing countries, a minimum percentage of class attendance is required in most institutions and this policy has not been adhered to, because of the various challenges the present method of taking attendance presents. The process of recording attendances for students was in the form of hardcopy papers and the system was manually done. Besides wasting time and taking efforts for preparing sheets and documents, other disadvantages may be visible to the traditional one due to loss or damage to the sheets-sheet could be stolen. The developed system considers as an alternative to the traditional one, it is easy, fast and reliable than the traditional one, especially after the development of information technology and its usage by educational institutions. Therefore, the design of an android student attendance system has a significant reality meaning. The system is an android application developed for daily student attendance in departments within the university. It facilitates access to the attendance of a particular student in a particular class. This system will also help in generating reports and evaluating the attendance eligibility of a student. The system is not only improving the work efficiency, students’ study and development, but also can save human and material resources.

1.2 Purpose Of The Study

The purpose of this research is to develop an android based attendance software for registering students’ details; their subjects, teachers, and related field. The daily attendance of students is taken automatically by selecting student name and program. The attendance report will be generated automatically without time consuming which is reliable and without mistakes.

1.3 Objective Of The Study

  1. Eliminate duplicate data entry and errors in time and attendance entries.
  2. Eliminate paperwork and save time.
  3. Automatic calculation of attendance.
  4. To increase student academy performance.

1.4 Statement Of Problem

In most educational institutions the attendance is taken manually. It is not only time consuming, but it is also unsecure and unreliable and it can be lost. Some institutions use manual paper attendance sheets for attendance while this will be difficult for teachers to keep track of the large number of students because by using paper sheets, a student can help the other students or his/her friend to answer their names even when the student may be absent or come late in class, so it is not reliable.

1.5 Scope Of The Study

The scope of the project is limited to several processes: handling of student attendance, managing student attendance, record student attendance for academy assessments. It will generate the reports such as student record for attending school activities. The Android student attendance management system is designed in such a way that makes it possible to access through any android platform.

1.6 Definition Of Terms

Chapter Five

Construction, Tests, Results, Conclusion And Recommendation

5.1 Implementation

The implementation of this project involved several stages which are;

  1. Simulation
  2. Software development
  3. Testing
5.1.1 Simulation

The designed Application was simulated using Android Studio so as to determine whether the application would work in the desired manner if bread boarded and subsequently soldered.

5.2 Software Development

After soldering, the software was developed using Android Studio and MySQLite. A communication port was created for interfacing the software with hardware.

5.3 Tests

The physical realization of the system is very vital. This is where the fantasy of the whole idea meets reality. The designer will see his or her work not just on paper but also as a finished hardware. After carrying out all the paper design and analysis, the project was implemented and tested to ensure its working ability, and was finally constructed to meet desired specifications.

All sections of the system were tested starting with the administrative part of the attendance. The test results shows that the system is effective and it has a fast response. There was no false identification of students, few cases of false reject which was later accepted and only pre-registered students were authenticated. The matric of the identified students were enrolled for attendance automatically.

The system was tested using the bio-data and fingerprints collected from eighty (20) students. In the test, there was no false acceptance i.e. a person that was not pre-registered was not falsely enrolled for attendance. There were a few false rejections during the test in which the system failed to identify some pre-registered users. The false rejects could be attributed to improper placement of the finger on the scanner and fingers that have been slightly scarred due to injuries. The test of the 20 students was carried out 8 times in groups of 10 and a success rate of over 94% was obtained from the tests carried out. The results of the test are shown below in the chart.
